So... aided and abetted by my housemates, I watched the first episode of Crowned tonight. (This has something to do with why I'm not currently posting a Mossdog update.) Crowned is a reality show in which mother-daughter pairs compete to win a beauty competition. I was duly amused, and much more interested than I thought I would be.
Part of the fun for me, I confess, was imagining what it would be like if Mom and I were doing it. It would never happen, but if it did, I know all the sorts of things she would say -- things like "Don't take it too seriously, love" to "Okay, we're here to have fun, so let's have some fun with this!" I can't quite imagine her being blase about the camera, but I can imagine her encouraging me to be blase about it. And she would be a fantastic sport about the whole thing and remind me to be a fantastic sport about it, too. Like one particularly annoying pair, we would have woken up early in the morning -- not because I needed my singing practice, but so we could sneak off and have breakfast together while everyone else was still asleep, and chitchat about how bizarre the whole experience was. And it would be silly but fun.
I'm known to brag on how cool my father is (things like how we played Colossal Caves Adventure together when I was tiny, how he made me a hexaflexagon, how he was the editor of an award-winning Star Trek fanzine, and how we translated swarm code between Inform and SNOBOL one time when I came home for Christmas. Yes, my geek heritage makes me happy.) But I think I sometimes forget to mention how very cool my mother is, too. We have a lot of fun together.
I miss my family. The requirements of my job are keeping me from going down for Christmas week, but I get to go home the week afterward. I'm really, really looking forward to the visit.
