I've been reading the Ferrett's LJ for years, and he's been asking his readers to send their readers to read his fiction for years, and I don't think I ever have before.

Therefore: this one's good, or I wouldn't spam you with it. It's also about love and loss, and it's effective, and it's very dark, so if you're not up for it, that's cool. I don't want anyone blindsided.

http://escapepod.org/2012/02/09/ep331-devour/ <-- Here, you can actually read the story. Or listen to it as an audio recording, if you prefer. (I read it. I almost never listen to audio recordings.)

http://theferrett.livejournal.com/1703301.html <-- Here, you can read what the Ferrett said to convince people to read his story. It also provides some context.

OKCupid just alerted me to someone new in my area. I'm fairly sure he's going to get shut down soon, but this was hysterical.

Details under the cut for posterity. )
The "Things I Won't Work With" section of chemist Derek Lowe's blog is fascinating and creepy. I found it thanks to [livejournal.com profile] unferth pointing out his article about chlorine trifluoride, which reacts explosively with... sand. (Also wood, water, cloth, humans, and darn near everything else.)

Details on chlorine trifluoride are at http://pipeline.corante.com/archives/2008/02/26/sand_wont_save_you_this_time.php, and the full archive is at http://pipeline.corante.com/archives/things_i_wont_work_with/.

"The crackled surface of deep green Russian serpentine resembles the amphibious skin of a reptile."

I will give you "resembles the skin of an amphibious reptile", which you might have meant, but I will not allow you to indicate that all reptiles have amphibious skin. Because NO.
[livejournal.com profile] mindways pointed out this NY Times about the positive and negative power of praise.

It rings pretty true to me, but I've never been a parent. Agree or disagree, it's an interesting read.
As some of you know, I read [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's LJ reliably. Around Christmas, he invites folks to post cheesecake pictures. So most of the comments on the post are (of course) pictures of breasts, but there was one comment that really made me laugh....

"I feel really stupid for asking, but what exactly is a cheesecake picture? I tried Googling it and got... pictures of cheesecake. Which is honestly what I was expecting when I clicked the comments link. I'm slow sometimes. Also, now craving cheesecake."

Poor kid.

Lego!

Who likes Legos?

Who likes MC Escher?

Who wants to see MC Escher's work rendered in Lego?

I knew you would! And since I just discovered this link via hrsfans.org, I'm happy to share.

Bizarre discovery of the morning:

The Consumerist reports that Xbox Live is adamantly opposed to people identifying their sexual orientation in their profile. This is supported to such an extreme extent that a real-life Mr. Richard Gaywood was required to pick a new usertag instead of using his own last name (although he was happy to provide documentation demonstrating that yes, it really was his real last name).

I used to work with a Ms. Hrdlicka. I wonder how Microsoft would handle that particular last name as an ID tag?

-----------------

[Edit] Update: It turns out that Microsoft has been in active discussion since the beginning of this year with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) about how their policies affect the LGBT community. Further, both Microsoft and Sony have stated that their language and profile policies were created to help protect people against homophobic and racist attacks. Further details available:

http://glaadblog.org/2009/02/26/xbox-live-homophobia-and-online-gaming-policy/

Thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] bkdelong for drawing this to my attention. (Pity Slashdot wasn't also linking into GLAAD when I spotted the original article!)
I don't have a dog handy, and I can't picture my bunny girl Thula handling this well, but maybe Abbie (http://abbie.blogspot.com/) would go along....

What's making me laugh about this is that the octopus seems huffy to me for some reason. "Don't want me here? Fine! I'll go be an octopus somewhere else, see if I care!"
Need a supercomputer to do millions of calculations? Don't care if it has very little RAM? 16 PS3s were used to create the PS3 Gravity Grid, which has been studying how black holes vibrate.

Before anyone gets too excited, I didn't enter Thula, my bunny girl, in this contest. She doesn't have patience enough to wear a harness, let alone fake tentacles and wings (hey, it's the only appropriate costume!)

However, I thought the pictures were awfully cute, so if you're in the mood to look at highly-patient ferrets and bunnies and things in costumes... have at. (There's even a hedgehog!)

[livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling posted a link today that made me laugh hard enough that I needed to share it. I rarely click through to videos, and when I do, I rarely watch the whole thing, but... yeah.

This is probably NSFW, as it's 4 minutes 19 seconds of pole dancer, but apparently her brand new kitten decided to scope out the scene and chase her feet the entire time she's doing her routine. I will let you know in advance that she never lands on him.

Embedded YouTube under the cut. )

Spore

Jun. 20th, 2008 08:32 am
I rather suspect this will only be of interest to [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel, but I now have a Spore creature page.

http://www.spore.com/view/profile/mossdog

If your (very reasonable) reaction is "What the heck is Spore?", then I direct you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spore_video_game.
http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/view.pl?id=102450

You may want your morning coffee before clicking through -- it's not NSFW, but I found it fairly disturbing (in that fascinating "Oo, shiny!" kind of way). This is Peter Mohrbacher's rather cyberpunk interpretation of an Angel of Vengeance.
Want to see something really cool?

http://theferrett.livejournal.com/1105748.html

No... really. A fairly well-known convention figure with a massive blog following put out the following request:

"What is the most beautiful thing you've ever created? Artists, show pictures. Musicians, link to MP3 files. Writers, show us the happy pieces. Proud moms, show us your children."

The responses are still flooding in. It's pretty neat. And you might want to put something beautiful of your own out there.

Thanks, Ferrett.
Came across the art of Marta Dahlig this morning. She's very good, and she has a nifty Seven Deadly Sins series, which you can see at http://blackeri.deviantart.com/gallery/. Envy is a gorgeous shade of green.

I also liked this one, with freckles on her nose and fish in the sky:
http://blackeri.deviantart.com/art/Umbrella-Sky-67965371

And this one is highly evocative, but it's really dark (not color, mood.)

For [livejournal.com profile] lux_alexander, mostly, but pretty darn cool to anyone reading George R. R. Martin. Henning Ludvigsen was apparently commissioned for a lot of the Game of Thrones art. (His other work is in here too, but I liked the Game of Thrones pieces best. Particularly awesome Melisandre here.)

Doesn't need any more commentary from me.
Life size steampunk wolf skull. There's a bear skull too. Both of these are made of awesome.

Check it out if you like steampunk.
