Jul. 1st, 2005

According to the current plan, I'm going to return to school in the fall of 2006 in order to become a sign language interpreter. I've been searching through interpretation schools and narrowed my list down to 15 options. (Obviously, more narrowing will be required.)

My current four favorites are marked in bold.

Bloomsburg University (Bloomsburg, PA) - Bachelor of Science
Columbia College (Chicago, IL) - Bachelor of ?
Columbus State Community College (Columbus, OH) - Associate of ?
Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville (Catonsville, MD) - Associate of Applied Science
Gallaudet University (Washington, DC) - Bachelor of Arts
Goshen College (Goshen, IN) - Bachelor of Arts
John A. Logan College (Carterville, IL) - Associate in Arts and Sciences
MacMurray College (Jacksonville, IL) - Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts
Mount Aloysius College (Cresson, PA) - Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts
National Technical Institute for the Deaf/Rochester Technical Institute (Rochester, NY) - Associate of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science
Nashville State (Nashville, TN) - Associate of Applied Science
Northeastern University (Boston, MA) - Bachelor of ?
University of New Hampshire (Manchester, NH) - Bachelor of Science
University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN) - Bachelor of Science
William Rainey Harper College (Palatine, IL) - Associate of Applied Science

In some cases, like Columbia, I had a hard time figuring out the official degree being offered. I'm very puzzled by how it changes from school to school. (I'm sure Northeastern makes it very obvious to figure out, but the departmental website is currently down, and I didn't think to note it while it was up.)

Now I need to find someone who will formally evaluate my signing skills. Many of these programs require a certain level of ASL competency, and I honestly don't know what my formal level of competency is. (Aside from Jesus. I can hold a very reliable conversation about Jesus.)
