While playing Nethack last night, I whimsically renamed the standard miscellaneous fruit (by default, "slime mold") to "pickled octopus".

When I encountered two fruit, Nethack appropriately dubbed them "two pickled octopi".

Indeed, it is wisely written that the Dev team thinks of everything.

One of my friends named the aforementioned fruit 'Longsword named Fire Demon' on his server, or somesuch. The same name as a magical artifact, anyway...

Another friend found one, was ecstatic, wielded it*, and then, got hungry. So he gave the program the usual command, and just accepted the thing at the top without looking...

"My, that was a yummy Longsword named Fire Demon."

The howl of outrage was apparently audible several floors down. ;)

* He didn't do much damage with it, but he didn't notice.

I've done that for real when polymorphed into a xorn. Typed too fast - "That Excalibur was delicious!"

Oh, cool! Now I want to try naming it bliny (no singular) or gnocco or father-in-law. :-)

You can see the full plurals code, though whether this will spoil the magic or startle you with its completeness is up to you.

It's difficult to spoil the magic for me! I am a thoroughly spoiled Nethack player.

This answers another question that we asked today... would it recognize -ium/-ia? And the answer is yes. (Though the image of the adventurer chowing down on giant paramecia may be too much to resist....)

The developers must be CDO (in alphabetical order, of course). :-)
